Quilter's Run starts tomorrow!

The dates are June 16-19 and June 23-26.

The Southern California Quilters run is larger this year with a total of 40 unique quilt shops. Each shop has prepared a 6" finished block pattern as a gift for visiting their shop. Here are the "Rules" below.

ALL passports turned in are eligible for prizes! Prizes include but not limited to, 40 Gift Baskets. Each passport turned in will be eligible for the drawing of a gift basket at each shop visited valued at $300, even if the passport is not complete. Plus 40 Young Winners will receive a Shop Gift Basket from one of the 40 participating shops they visited, valued at $50 each, especially for our young quilters ages 8 -16!

It is FREE to participate! Simply pick up a passport at any of the 40 participating shops on any day during the Quilter’s Run. Have your passport stamped at each shop you visit. Make sure to leave your passport at the final shop visited. All passports turned in are eligible for prizes! You may only pick up a passport and have it stamped during the run dates and hours.

Grand Prize
- THREE (3) lucky quilters will win a retreat weekend to share with
three of their friends (either Vina de Lestonnac Retreat Center in Temecula
or Inspirations in Big Bear)

First Place
- ONE (1) lucky quilter will win a Bernina sewing machine ($900 value!)

Second Place
- FOUR (4) lucky quilters will win a Five Hundred Dollar ($500) shopping spree
valid at any or a combination to include all of the participating quilt shops!

Third Place

Join us this weekend at the South Bay Quilter's Guild Show on Sat, Feb 19 & 20. Held at the Torrance Cultural Arts Cente r!

We're going to the Jersey Shore! For a quilt show---not the TV show! The Quilt Festival of New Jersey will be help March 3-6 at the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, NJ. We will be there with all our goodies.

Next, we will be at the Pomona Quilt, Craft and Sewing Festival at the Fairplex in Pomona on March 10, 11, & 12. This show runs from 10 - 5 each day. We have free coupons for admission at the shop.

The Spring Fling Shop Hop is coming up on Mar 25, 26, & 27. Join 8 different quilt shops in the North Orange County area as we host this event. Each participant will receive a free fat quarter, a free pattern and a "come-back" coupon from each store they visit.

Someone said you can see the quilt in a trailer, and also a movie clip from the Today Show, but we haven't been able to track it down. ABC Wool Sampler class that was Thursdays are now changed to Tuesday!

Third Tuesday of the month beginning September 14, from 10:30- 3. $25 + kit for the first month, only kit fee for the remaining months. Sammie is presenting a wonderful wool and cotton sampler illustrating ordinary chores and seasonal motifs. The background is cotton, but the detail is wool appliqué with embroidered details. This s a great way to learn wool felt appliqué and practice your needlework techniques.

Darling Dolly Dresses class that was Thursdays are now changed to Tuesday!

September 21 from 12-4 PM $25: Join Sammie for a fun afternoon embellishing Holly Holderman’s Dolly Dress fabric panels with embroidery, charms, lace and other fun trims. If you want to complete your embellishments with Sammie continuing classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6-9 PM. $10 per session.

Why are Fabric Prices Going Up?

This is what a fabric rep was talked to us about last week (Some information above was taken from an article Karen Montgomery wrote for the FabShop News magazine.):

Fabric prices are rising, no doubt about it. Our economy does play a roll but did you know that prices are tied to the global marketplace?

Quilt-weight goods are being produced in China. Possibly 90% of the cotton for our quilt fabrics are grown in China and turned into greige (pronounced gray) goods (textiles that have not received any bleaching, dyeing or finishing treatment after being produced by a textile process). The greige goods are shipped to print plants in Japan or Korea but now China also has it's own print plants and will continue to print more and more of the fabrics.

Another reason fabric is expense is because the weight of fabric adds to shipping cost when being moved from country to country.

And then there is the U.S. economy and how our dollar compares with foreign currency. The suppliers must negotiate everything from the cost of the goods to the printing and shipping.

Recently, when cotton prices started going crazy overseas, the Chinese mills decided to hold the goods hostage and ship to whoever paid them the most money!

So don't blame the quilt shops when you see the high cost of fabric. Quilt shop prices will go up when the manufactures are forced to raise their prices, but that's so the shop can stay in business and offer you, the customer, the lovely fabrics that are being produced.

Tomorrow is the beginning of our Beginning Knitting Class! It's for both KIDS & ADULTS! It's a 4 session class and it's on $25! You can also pick up a starter kit for $25 and it includes needles, wool, and a pattern! It's from 9am - 12pm and we are so excited to get it started!

Today we also have our 411 Get It Done Class! It goes from 10am - 4pm with Diana Fish $10/session, and there's no reservation required! Bring your UFOs & some help finishing them while enjoying the company of other busy, lively quilters. Just drop in and sew all day!

We're in a Movie!

Some of you may remember that our very talented boss, Gina, got the opportunity to make a "Gees Bend"-like quilt for the upcoming movie "Due Date" (with Robert Downey Jr...so handsome). Well, it is finally going to be released on November 5th!!! Look for my quilt on the wall of a house in the movie. Either that or on the cutting room floor!

The countdown to the movie being released is to the right JUST to make sure NO ONE misses opening night!

Quilts of Valor event going on from 10-4!

The CiJ is the 2nd class to the Embellished Stockings series

(last week's was a raging success!)

The Quilts of Valor event is where you bring any orphan blocks, 100% cotton fabric or scraps (any color or design but juvenille), & UFO's to sew and donate to our war-wounded veterans for their hard work and sacrifice to keep us free! Bring your machines and a treat to share! (unless you don't want to...there're places you can buy food nearby) Bring tops or complete quilts you have just lying around to donate. Come have fun and say thanks to the troops by making quilts for them to aid in their healing!! We will have some supplies ready to construct blocks, quilt tops, pillowcases, and backs.

They have given 178 so far this year!!!

A shot from our quilt market booth! Had fun meeting all the shop owners and pattern buyers. It warms my heart to hear the success stories of quilters making my designs and having fun sewing! We bought some display items at Ikea and a lady wants to haul them home to her shop--she loved what we did with the pieces! Gotta love that kind of transaction.

Adam the Rick Rack man, now has even jumbo-ier Rick rack ...about 2 1/4 inches wide. I will be ordering up! Plus he has been sporting an "Apron a Go Go" apron all market! Thanks for the cross marketing (not dressing), Adam!

Had lunch with this guy (Mark Lipinski...he has a fantastic blog). He entertains the troops like no other. He is directing the operations of four quilting magazines. Hope to write a few pieces sometime!

Show and Tell!

Out devoted customer, Margo Weber, stopped by the shop and wanted to "show and tell" the quilt she made with her daughter, Stacy. The pattern is Mega Bits by Swirly Girl Designs. She used 28 fat quarters bought almost exclusively at Fresh Picked Fabrics, AND she quilted it herself! It is a darling quilt that we're so glad she came to share with us!

2010 Spring Fling Shop Hop with Suggested Route and Map

The 2010 Spring Fling Shop Hop is coming up this weekend! The hours are

Friday, March 26th, 10am - 6pm

Saturday, March 27th, 10am - 6 pm

and Sunday, March 28th, 12(noon) - 4pm.

Click here for a suggested hopping route for the Shop Hop! If you don't like the route we've arranged, just move around the locations on the left by clicking and holding down the green letters (A, B, C, etc) and moving them in the order you'd like to travel! It also tells the directions between each shop, if you scroll down! By our calculations, if you spend a half an hour in each shop (except for Fresh Picked Fabrics which we, of course, have set aside 45 minutes), it would take approximately 5 hours and 38 minutes to complete the whole course! What a great way to spend your day! (There are lots of places along the way to nibble for lunch)

Fun, Fabric, Classes and More!

We are excited about offering sewing classes as well as quilting classes at the shop. Come and learn to make the cutest Lovable Bubble skirt on March 18th from 5:30-8:30pm. The cost is $25 plus the pattern. We have the dang cutest reversible kids jumper class too.

We will teach you how to put in a zipper and you can make a "glam" bag at the same time!

Plus, we are now offering kids sewing classes. Kids can learn to make a simple quilt and/or pillow case. Call the shop to get the details of to schedule a class or sewing party!

Is there a quilting or sewing class you would like to take? Get together a couple friends and we will book a class just for you. Friendship groups are welcome too!

Need a Saturday night sew in? Join us every other Saturday night for our "Sew Sew Saturday". Come sew in your socks (or tennis shoes) from 5 p.m. till ????. Call to reserve your spot, but it is free!

Happy March! Two shows this weekend!

Start the month off right by coming to one or both of the shows we'll be in this weekend!

The first is the Desert Guild Quilt Show with the theme being Sunshine, Shadows, and Stars (what a wonderful title!) It's Friday and Saturday from 10-4pm at the Palm Springs Pavilion. Admission is $7, but there's free parking! There will be over 150 quilts featured at this show, opportunity quilts, mini quilts, Merchant Mall, Harpist, and a Boutique and ASQ certified appraiser! There won't be space for driving strollers around, so please do not bring them either day.

Our second show is Saturday and Sunday at the Friendship Square Quilt Show at the La Habra Community Center Admission is $6, and there's free parking at this one too! Come as early as you want and stay as long as you want but please, only bring your stroller on Sunday. There will be both an opportunity quilt and Merchant Mall at this show also, a large quilt display, a silent auction, boutique, and quilt sale! The opportunity quilt, "Floral Fantasy" 2010, is a Baltimore Album style which is hand appliqued and hand quilted. The drawing will be held Sunday, March 7, at 3:30pm, so make sure to be there!

You can never go to too many shows so come say hello at both!

Music Where on the Internet is Fresh Picked Fabrics?

There's a website called socialmention.com where you can search to find where you show up on the internet (you can make it only look on blogs, or only websites, etc), and so we searched and we found a few! (as you're waiting for the hits to come up it says "Searching content from across the universe." How fun!)

The first one is here on boogaj.com which is a blog by a woman who is sooooo diverse but seems to like all of the important things: sewing, her family, and chocolate (she's has a chocolate blog where she reviews different kinds of chocolate...why didn't each of us think of that sooner--and excuse to eat chocolate?!) She also sells wonderful wool bags here (and in the picture to the right) that you should go look at! Her post on us was that her daughter sewed her first quilt using one of our quilt patterns!

The next one is here at curbyscloset.com, and there are some great pictures of us there! Curby's Closet is a woman who makes beautiful baby clothes. She sells both her clothes (the pink dress to the left is an example) and the patterns! She has a great blog and a very successful Etsy site! Take a look!

Another one is here at jaybirdquilts.com who wrote about the fantastic amount of trim she bought at our shop (the picture to the right was taken by her). She has a fabric obsession (that we very much support) and the post is about all the great things she got at lots of different wonderful quilt/fabric shops.

Another one is here at robingallagher.blogspot.com who posted about the Holiday Shop Hop she attended a few months back that included us! She loves quilting and creating her own patterns. She also does lectures and classes called Making a Difference Through Quilting--what a cool idea! You can get that information here if you're interested. The picture to the left is her logo--what a great play on her name, Robin!

There's also one just recently here at mommaginger.blogspot.com as their shop of the weekend! She has an Etsy shop that sells women's clothing, handbags (example to the right), and slippers so if you're looking for something like that, stop by! She had a post a little while back that mentioned creative clutches that are coming up soon so visit often to make sure you see those!

The last one we're going to write about now (but not that last one we found--maybe yours will be next!) is here at thematerialgirlsquilts.blogspot.com where she talks about when Gina visited her shop! The post is called "Celebrity Sighting." They're a wonderful fabric shop in South Jordan that is jam packed with very pretty fabric, and they always seem to be having events so if you're in the Salt Lake City, Utah area--make sure to stop by!
